Procaine (procaine), its hydrochloride is called novocain (novocain). Its hydrochloride is white crystal or crystalline powder, odorless, slightly bitter in taste, followed by numbness, and easily soluble in water. The local anesthesia of procaine lasts about 1 hour. If a trace amount of epinephrine is added to the solution, the effect can last for 1 to 2 hours. It has weak penetration into skin and mucous membranes and is not suitable for use as topical anesthesia. After absorption, this product is mainly hydrolyzed by plasma pseudocholinesterase into p-aminobenzoic acid and diethylaminoethanol. The former can compete against the antibacterial effect of sulfa drugs and weaken the efficacy of sulfa drugs; the latter can enhance the effect of digitalis, so patients who have taken sufficient amounts of digitalis should use this drug with caution.
Property
