Phenacetin is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C10H13NO2. It is an analgesic and antipyretic medication that was formerly used to alleviate pain and reduce fever. Structurally, phenacetin consists of an acetaminophen (paracetamol) molecule with an ethoxy group attached to the benzene ring. This ethoxy group distinguishes phenacetin from acetaminophen. In terms of physical properties, phenacetin is typically a white crystalline solid with a slightly sweet taste. It is sparingly soluble in water but more soluble in alcohol and other organic solvents.
Phenacetin has been largely discontinued for medical use due to concerns about its safety, and its use has been replaced by safer alternatives, such as acetaminophen (paracetamol). It was found to be associated with an increased risk of kidney damage and the development of a condition known as methemoglobinemia, which reduces the ability of blood to carry oxygen. Additionally, prolonged use of phenacetin has been linked to an increased risk of kidney cancer.
