There are mainly two kinds of antibacterial peptides produced in human body: defensin family peptides and cathelicidin family peptides. Although defensin family peptides have many members, cathelicidin has only one antibacterial peptide product, LL-37. LL-37 is the C-terminal cleavage product of cathelicidin peptide Hcap-18, which can directly kill bacteria, fungi and viruses. LL-37 also plays an immunomodulatory role by chemotactic immune cells, regulating the secretion of inflammatory promoters/inhibitors, and coordinating natural immunity and acquired immunity. LL-37 can also act on vascular endothelial cells and epithelial cells to stimulate angiogenesis and promote injury repair.
